Pharmacy Residency Program Frequently Asked Questions

How many resident positions do you offer?
We offer two Oncology Pharmacy Residency positions each year.

Is the pharmacist license in NY State required?
Yes. If the resident does not already possess a NY state pharmacist license, he/she will be required to initiate the process with the NABP to acquire the NY state pharmacist license.

What are the benefits?
Approximate annual stipend is $47,000. Other benefits include:

  • Professional travel stipend to attend ASHP mid-year and HOPA meetings

Please tell me about the interview process
An onsite interview will be held in January/February. The interview process will include a tour of the facilities, an interview with the program preceptors, and a 30 minute presentation (topic of candidate’s choice).

How much staffing is required?
Residents provide clinical coverage one weekend per month, as well as staffing two Mondays per month at the RPCI satellite pharmacy.

Do residents have their own office space?
Yes. Residents’ office is located on 5th floor in main hospital. They have their own desk, laptop computer, phone and pager.

What teaching opportunities are available?
Residents will have many opportunities to precept APPE pharmacy students who come to RPCI for their clinical rotations, including a student lecture series. Residents will also have the opportunity to provide didactic lectures for pharmacy students at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and at the D’Youville School of Pharmacy. There is also a teaching certificate class offered at the State University of New York at Buffalo in which residents can participate with other pharmacy residents in the Buffalo area.

How do you support BCOP certificatione?
An informal BCOP review is conducted weekly. Residents are encouraged to attend the national BCOP review sponsored by the ACCP each year.

How many pharmacists have the BCOP certification?
As of June 2011, we have 7 pharmacists who are board certified in oncology Pharmacy.

Are there any leadership opportunities?
Yes. Residents are actively involved in different committees and projects with various departments, which include but not limited to, Nursing Task Force, Anticoagulation Management Service, Quality Improvement Committee, Medication Safety, Pharmacy/Information Technology, Clinical Pharmacist Specialists and Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee. There are opportunities to publish articles as well. Formal leadership training is offered by the Human Resources Department at RPCI.

Nicknamed the “Queen City," Buffalo is the second most populous city in the state of New York. Located in Western New York on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River. Buffalo is the principal city of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. Buffalo is situated just 90 miles from Toronto to the North and approximately 400 miles from New York City to the East.

The city itself has a population of 300,000 and a metropolitan area of over 1,000,000. The Greater Buffalo-Niagara region offers professional athletic events including the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, excellent skiing in the winter, a rich history of classic and modern art, and numerous festivals in the summer. Buffalo is also home to the chicken wings and boasts an eclectic collection of cafes and restaurants which reflect Buffalo’s melting pot of cultures.
