Roswell Park Cancer Institute offers an 10-week nursing summer intern program for students entering their senior year of a baccalaureate nursing program in New York State. Our program offers a unique opportunity for students to increase their clinical experience in a progressive, comprehensive cancer center setting under the preceptorship of an experienced registered professional nurse.

This summer experience can enhance your nursing knowledge by providing the opportunity to:

  1. Work in the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Western New York
  2. Develop clinical experience in basic nursing procedures, and observe and assist a registered oncology nurse with advanced procedures
  3. Utilize the nursing process specific to oncology nursing care
  4. Develop communication skills and interpersonal relationships in a collegial environment

There are opportunities in many areas including:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Pediatric Oncology

Interns will:

  • Participate in a Rowell Park Cancer Institute orientation
  • Work in two clinical areas over the ten-week internship
  • Participate in additional clinical rotations in areas such as Wound and Ostomy Care, and Interventional Radiology
  • Participate in seminars examining current practice and professional oncology nursing issues

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Nursing students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program in New York State. Baccalaureate students are preferred.
    • If the applicant is enrolled in an accredited nursing program outside of the state of New York it is incumbent on the student and the school to contact the NYS Department of Education, Professional Educational Program Review to apply for Permission to Operate. The applicant will not be considered without such approval. Please submit proof of permission with the hard copy application requirements.
  2. Enrollment in a credit-bearing course for the duration of the internship.
  3. Successful completion of a “Foundations in Nursing” course, and minimum of two semesters of clinical study.
  4. Graduation from nursing program by May 2018.
  5. Able to work a full time schedule (40 hours per week) for a total of 10 weeks any shift.
  6. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Application Process

  1. Submit the online application.
  2. Submit a hard copy of two written letters of reference from clinical instructors or other faculty members of the Nursing Department.
  3. Submit a hard copy of your current official transcript.
  4. Submit a hard copy of your resume.
  5. Submit a hard copy of your letter of intent.
  6. If offered a position, successfully complete the pre-employment process including the submission of another official transcript showing you are enrolled in a credit-bearing course.

Incomplete or late applications will neither be processed nor considered.

Applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of complete applications.

Final Selection Process

Final selection to the program will be based on successful completion of the online application, resume, letter of intent, GPA, faculty recommendations, and the RPCI employment process. Students will receive email notification of their application status by March 31, 2017.
