Journal Club

Course ID:
MIR 521/522
Description:

Journal Club will begin with an organizational meeting on Tuesday, September 6th.  All JC classes will be held on Tuesdays in The Grossberg Library (CCC 314), unless notified otherwise on days we have an invited speaker.  In that case, we will try to remain in Zebro and lunch will be served.

The new schedule is below. JC dates have been compared with the Immunology Student Seminar Series for potential conflict.  If there is any problem, please let us know.  If your assigned date falls on a date that we also have an outside invited speaker, please select choices from that lab.

The format will be similar as in previous years and will begin with the most senior students.  Please send 3 choices via email in order of your preference 7-10 days beforehand to Dr. Jiang and myself.  We will then make the final selection and Natalie will make the paper available to all via the following link:  http://www.roswellpark.edu/education/phd-programs/immunology/courses

The Student Presenter will lead the discussion and try to engage as many students as possible.  An important goal of this process is to critique the science as if you were the 'Reviewer’ - that is, discover fault (if possible), such as:

a. the extent of the advance to the field

b. missing controls

c. over-interpretation of data

d. flaws in experimental design

(Just because the work is published does not necessarily mean that the review process is flawless).

Select the latest research in immunology or tumor immunology.  Prominent journals include:  Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Immunity, J. Clinical Investigation, Cancer Cell, Science, Nature, J. Immunology, Cancer Research, J. Experimental Medicine and PNAS.  Indeed, the choices of journals are quite extensive and span a continuum of complexities.  However, regardless of what you choose, the article should be discussed in light of the metric outlined in item #4.

Please keep in mind that JC is a required class, and let us know beforehand if you will be unable to attend.

 In terms of the articles:

a. students should select the latest research articles in immunology, cancer or cancer immunology journals.   This includes those published in very high impact journals, such as Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Immunity, JCI, Cancer Cell, Science, Nature, etc. However, you may also consider other excellent journals, such as JI, Cancer Research, JEM, PNAS, etc.

b. senior students (> 4 years) may alternatively select a landmark study. A great website is:  http://www.kendallasmith.com/

Lastly, please note that our required 'Ethics Discussion' is tentatively set on April 25th, a date that does not overlap with an invited speaker. Details will follow as we get closer.
