The mission of the Population Science and Cancer Prevention Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute is to:

  • conduct research on the cause and prevention of cancer in human populations;
  • test the application of methods to reduce cancer mortality by preventing exposure to cancer-causing agents and through early detection of cancer;
  • train health professionals to apply cancer control methods
  • to collect data that may be used to better understand cancer trends.

The public health orientation of the Program is evidenced by the focus of research efforts on cancers which cause the greatest proportion of morbidity and mortality.

Past and current Program activities have had strong foundations in the research of breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancers. Additionally, the Program aims to address the exposures, behaviors and health services which have significant potential for impact on the various types of cancer.

The Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program is committed to reducing tobacco exposure, increasing early detection of breast, cervical and prostate cancer, identifying dietary and chemopreventive interventions, and better understanding the influence of familial factors on colorectal and ovarian cancers.

The Tobacco Control Program, located in the Department of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, is the focus of Roswell Park's tobacco research and intervention efforts.
